Local Information

The local currency is AUD – Australian dollar. As a general rule, it’s better to exchange money once you are in Australia, but the best thing to do would be to research online first, as the exchange rates are always dynamic. There are several online currency exchange options in Australia, but they will be more expensive than just using ATMs or paying with cards. Fremantle seems short of exchange bureaus as we know them. There are 2 travel money shops – Travel Money OZ and Travelex and the rates are negotiable. The language spoken in Australia is English. The Aussies speak slang, called strine and it’s characterized by some very interesting expressions and by shortening words. Some of the most popular ones are ‘barbie’ for barbeque, ‘arvo’ for afternoon, ‘roo’ for kangaroo, ‘tradie’ for a tradesman, ‘Macca’s’ for McDonalds. Opening hours and bank holidays – in general, all shops and other services are open 9 am until 5 pm Monday to Friday, and until 12 on Saturdays. Many malls and tourist attractions would be open on Sundays as well with normal working hours. Tipping in Australia is not as common as it is in Europe and the United States. There are jars for tips, but they are hardly used. You can tip if you are happy with the service, but you don’t have to. There are no service charges added to your bill at restaurants either. The local time in Fremantle is GMT+8 and the international dialling code is + 618.
